Running the Variations Audio Timeliner on Yosemite (OS X 10.10)
As of the 10.10 (Yosemite) release of OS X for Apple Mac computers, Apple no longer includes QuickTime for Java. The Variations Audio Timeliner needs this functionality to play audio. So to get the VAT to work, you will have to find a pre-Yosemite Mac and copy two files over to your Yosemite computer, into the right place with the right file permissions. You will also need to install Java 6. The instructions below offer a step-by-step approach for accomplishing this.
Step 1: Find the missing QuickTime files on a pre-Yosemite Mac and package them up
Open the Terminal utility under Applications/Utilities. In the terminal window, paste the following line:
tar -cvPf qtj.tar /System/Library/Java/Extensions/QTJava.zip /System/Library/Java/Extensions/libQTJNative.jnilib
Then press Return to run the command. It will create a file, qtj.tar, in your current folder.
Step 2: Copy qtj.tar to your Yosemite computer
The simplest way to copy the file may be to either put it on a thumb drive or copy it up to and then down from cloud storage (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, or numerous others). Put the file in your Downloads folder.
Step 3: Install the missing files on your Yosemite computer
If you don't have experience using the OS X terminal window, you may need to get help from your IT support for these steps.
You must be logged in as an administrative user on your computer to perform these steps.
Step 4: Install Java 6
Install Java 6 from Apple's website.
Step 5: Run the Variations Audio Timeliner
Start the VAT application. If it complains about permissions, try it again. If it doesn't work, please contact Variations Audio Timeliner Support at Indiana University, letting us know exactly what you did and what error you are seeing.
